Hennepin County Sheriff Witt Must Stop Aiding ICE

CTA Name:  Hennepin County Sheriff Witt Must Stop Aiding ICE

Date Created: 2/9/26

Explainer (describe the issue):

Hennepin County Sheriff Witt claims that her department does not aid ICE except “when protecting people’s safety.” However on multiple occasions at the Whipple Building Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputies have violently arrested protesters who were non-violently exercising their First Amendment rights.

On Saturday, February 7, right-wing thugs attacked peaceful protesters at Whipple, shooting them with pepperballs and bear spray, in full view of multiple HCSO deputies who did not intervene.

Additionally, media reports indicate that Sheriff Witt is actively considering an agreement with ICE to allow ICE agents into the Hennepin County Jail, something they have been prohibited from doing for more than a decade.

Call to Action (what specific action are we taking):

Call HCSO and demand that:

  • HCSO stop acting as ICE’s violent enforcers at the Whipple Building

  • HCSO not enter into an agreement with ICE to allow ICE agents into the Hennepin County Jail

Sample Script:

Hello, I’m calling about HCSO and its relationship with ICE. On multiple recent occasions at the Whipple Building HCSO deputies have violently arrested protesters who were non-violently exercising their First Amendment rights. They failed to stop right-wing thugs who attacked Whipple protesters with pepper ball guns and bear spray in full view of the deputies. HCSO should stop aiding ICE at the Whipple Building or anywhere else in Hennepin County.

Secondly, Sheriff Witt should not enter into any agreement with ICE that allows them into the County Jail.
